The NHL®
The National Hockey League, abbreviate as the NHL®, is regarded as the world’s premier hockey league. Players from more than 20 countries compete in the NHL®, which has teams located in the USA and Canada . The top stars of the league include Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Mike Richards, Nicklas Lidstrom, Joe Thornton, Henrik Sedin, and Ilya Kovalchuk. The distinction of having the oldest trophy in North American sports belongs to the NHL® with the Stanley Cup®. The Stanley Cup® is named after Lord Stanley of Preston who took a fancy to the game of hockey when he was in Canada . The Stanley Cup® is the only trophy in North America that is passed from one winner to the next with the every winning player's name inscribed on the trophy. The current NHL® commissioner is Gary Bettman. The History of the NHL
The National Hockey League began in 1917 when three teams were in dispute with the National Hockey Association. The NHL replaced the NHA in 1919 and ever since the 1926 season, the Stanley Cup has been the sole cup for the winner of the NHL playoffs. The last non-NHL team to win the cup was in 1925 when the Victoria Cougars defeated the Montreal Canadians. The Boston Bruins were the first American team to join the NHL in 1924. Originally the NHL started with six teams - the Original Six, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Chicago and New York. There are now 30 teams in North America. The Montreal Canadians hold the record for most Stanley Cups with 24. The closest American team is the Detroit Red Wings with 11 Cups.NHL® Tickets
