The National Hockey League, abbreviate as the NHL®, is regarded as the world’s premier hockey league. The National Hockey League began in 1917 when three teams were in dispute with the National Hockey Association. The NHL replaced the NHA in 1919 and ever since the 1926 season, the Stanley Cup has been the sole cup for the winner of the NHL playoffs. The last non-NHL team to win the cup was in 1925 when the Victoria Cougars defeated the Montreal Canadians. The Boston Bruins were the first American team to join the NHL in 1924. Originally the NHL started with six teams - the Original Six, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Chicago and New York. There are now 30 teams in North America. The Montreal Canadians hold the record for most Stanley Cups with 24. The closest American team is the Detroit Red Wings with 11 Cups.NHL® Tickets
