Liverpool Football Club

Liverpool Football Club is located in Liverpool, which is also home to Everton FC. The current captain of The Reds is Steven Gerrard, an English favorite. Other players include fan favorite Fernando Torres, goalkeeper Brad Jones and Jamie Carragher (vice captain). Being in Liverpool, the fixtures between Liverpool FC and Everton FC have become known as the Merseyside Derby, which has been played 213 times and counting. It has been noted that the majority of the Liverpool fan basis is predominantly Catholic compared to, the Everton fan base which is predominantly Protestant but both clubs were founded by a Methodist base group. There has been a smaller rivalry with neighboring Manchester and one of their teams, Manchester United. This rivalry stems from both cities having a working class background.

History of the Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC was formed in 1892 by John Houlding, who also owned Anfield. He was originally part of the Everton FC group, but started The Reds when Everton FC moved to Goodison Park. The Merseyside Derby is steeped in tradition and there is no love lost between the clubs or fans. This series holds the record for most red cards ever handed out between two clubs. Since 1992 the Merseyside matches have seen more people carded off the pitch than any other Premier League rivalry. Liverpool FC is been one the most successful English Football clubs since its inception. The club spent the 1953-54 season until 1962 in the second division. Since then, there have been dramatic shifts at the top that have perennially kept Liverpool atop the English and European tables. One big blemish on the Liverpool record is the disaster at Hesyel Stadium in which Liverpool was competing against Jueventus for the European Cup title. A reds fan breached a security fence into the Jueventus fan section that caused more reds fans to push against the fence that eventually collapsed and crushed 14 Italians. Liverpool received a 6 year ban from European competitions. 1st year manager Roy Hodgson hopes to return Liverpool to first place in the EPL. He replaces Rafel Benitez who managed the club from 2004 to 2010. The Reds have won 18 top division titles, 7 FA Cup finals, 7 football league cups (currently called the Carling Cup), 5 European Cup finals and 3 UEFA Cup finals. The team was sold in 2010 to American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
