Stadium Information

Mineirão, officially Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto (Governor Magalhães Pinto Stadium), is one of 12 venues for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and will host football (soccer) in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Mineirão was built 1959-1965, closed for renovations June 2010, and is scheduled to reopen in 2013. It is the second largest stadium in Brazil, after Maracanã.

Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon), is the capital and largest city in the state of Minas Gerais. Approximately two million people live in Belo Horizonte and more than five million in its metro area.

Belo Horizonte received international attention as “The City that Ended Hunger,” but may be better known as the bar capital of Brazil. There are 12,000 bars in the city, more per capita than anywhere else in the country.

Transportation

Air: Tancredo Neves International Airport, formerly Confins Int’l, (CNF, SBCF) is located 24 mi, 38 km north of downtown Belo Horizonte. Bus and taxi provide transportation between Tancredo Neves and the citycenter or subway system. Airlines at Tancredo Neves include: American, Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Copa, Gol, PLUNA, TAM, TAP Portugal, TRIP Linhas Aéreas, and Webjet.

Bus: Belo Horizonte has an extensive bus system that is integrated with its Metro.

Metro: Currently the Belo Horizonte Metro (MetroBH) is one line from Vilarinho to Eldorado Station. An additional line from Santa Tereza to Barreiro is under construction and another from Pampulha to Savassi is planned.

Tourism

Note: Many places including museums, parque municipal, and Mangueira park are closed on Mondays.

Pampulha Neighborhood: 1940′s neighborhood with highlights of Brazil modern architecture. Home of the São Francisco de Assis Church, Parque Guanabara (small amusement park), Late Tenis Clube, and Pampulha Architectural Complex.

Mangabeiras Park: Beautiful geography – forest, lake, springs – source streams of the Rio das Velhas join here.

Alta Vila Tower: Hard Rock Cafe on the main floor, incredible views of Belo Horizonte on the top.

Mercado Central: Popular, traditional Brazilian market

Hippie Fair: Sundays from 8am to 2pm in front of Municipal Park. One of the largest fairs in Brazil, attracting 60,000 – 120,000 people every Sunday.
